Students can come here to interact with instructors and form study groups. An overview of your course materials, study and test taking techniques. The student will learn specific use of the Dorland’s dictionary, information on medical specialties, and what constitutes a healthcare record. The study of medicolegal issues surrounding the healthcare industry. The student will learn the basics of the Privacy Rule of HIPAA, regulatory requirements of Joint Commission, risk management, and release of information. An overview of grammar and punctuation to include the parts of speech, parts of a sentence, phrases, clauses, classification of sentences as well as subject-verb agreement. The student will learn industry style guidelines on certain aspects of written language, such as abbreviations, capitalization, and the use of numerals and units of measure. If credit is given for prior study, this summary class will take the place of the four individual core classes (Medical Terminology with Human Anatomy, Laboratory and Diagnostic Procedures, Pharmacology, and Concepts of Disease). An introduction to prefixes, suffixes, root words, combining forms, Latin and Greek forms, spelling, and pronunciation with emphasis on building a working medical vocabulary in all the body systems and medical specialties, in laboratory medicine and imaging and in pharmacology. The student will learn the structure and function of the human body; body organization, chemical and cellular structure and function as well as the sense organs, integumentary, urinary, digestive, musculoskeletal, respiratory, endocrine, reproductive, neuropsychiatric, and immune systems. An introduction to the six principal types of diagnostic procedure: physical measurements, electrodiagnostics, endoscopy, medical imaging, anatomical pathology, and clinical pathology. The student will learn the methodology, indications or purposes, and range of results for each test or procedure which will enable the student to recognize pertinent terminology and to grasp the general sense of a report. An introduction to the principles of pharmacology. The student will obtain a comprehensive study of drug action, routes of administration, classes of drugs by body system, as well as antibiotics, antiviral drugs, IV fluids, blood products, anesthetics, emergency drugs, vaccines and immunizations, and chemotherapy agents. This course is designed to introduce the student to computers, word processing applications, dictation and transcription equipment and related technologies, and to develop computer skills and proficiency. The student will be able to synthesize and apply technologies used in healthcare documentation, as well as gain an awareness of related emerging technologies. An in-depth study of the history and physical examination. The student will learn the content and terminology used under each of the main headings within a history and physical examination report, which is followed by transcription of authentic physician-dictated reports organized by body systems. Emphasis will be on development of accuracy, speed, and medical knowledge for transcription of nonsurgical medical dictation to include: letters, chart notes, history and physical examination reports, consultations, emergency room reports, and discharge summaries. The student will learn to use reference materials and other resources efficiently, as well as editing and proofreading techniques. A comprehensive study of the fundamental nature of disease and its treatment. The student will learn common human diseases and conditions including etiology, signs and symptoms, diagnostic and treatment modalities, prognoses, and prevention. Transcription of authentic physician-dictated surgical reports organized by body systems. The student will learn the content and terminology used under each of the main headings within an operative report with an emphasis on development of accuracy, speed, medical, and surgical knowledge for transcription of surgical dictation. The student will learn to use reference materials and other resources efficiently, as well as editing, proofreading and critical thinking techniques. An audit of a patient chart. The student will learn to analyze, critique, and summarize a patient chart through strong research and analytical thinking skills to produce an extensive investigational report to determine if the documentation supports the patient’s diagnosis and treatment. Overview of common work environments throughout the medical transcription industry. The student will learn to develop professional work behavior, explore professional development and continuing education, as well as prepare for the MTS of Texas internship. |
